Lord Alexander Pyne-ffoulkes, the younger son of the Duke of Ilvar, holds a bitter grudge against his wealthy father. The Duke intends to give his Duchess a priceless diamond parure on their wedding anniversary - so Alec hires a pair of jewel thieves to steal it.

The Duke's remote castle is a difficult target, and Alec needs a way to get the thieves in. Soldier-turned-criminal Jerry Crozier has the answer: He'll pose as a Society gentleman and become Alec's new best friend.

But Jerry is a dangerous man: controlling, remote, and devastating. He effortlessly teases out the lonely young nobleman's most secret desires, and soon he's got Alec in his bed - and the palm of his hand.

Or maybe not. Because as the plot thickens, betrayals, secrets, new loves, and old evils come to light. Now the jewel thief and the aristocrat must keep up the pretence, find their way through a maze of privilege and deceit, and confront the truth of what's between them...all without getting caught.

I loved this book. it was very unexpected and I adored the accents and the whole narration.

a little gem

For me the first half is a bit tedious plus I wasn't a great fan of the dynamic and the sense of whether Alec could trust Jerry. But the second half picked up.
The narrator was great and made the explicit parts sound not-awkward which is always difficult in audiobooks.

gets better in the second half

Well I finished this in one sitting and I'm left craving for more. The story was really good. Interesting and unexpected. And Cornell Collins' performance was as enjoyable as always.

Enjoyable story with a fantastic performance

Well written, dramatic period tale. MCs you can like, perfectly defined and characterized, in an interesting intriguing jewel theft adventure with a twist. Emotionally engaging entrapments and revelations. So refreshing to find real English, performed with perfect narration as only an Englishmen can voice or appreciate. Incidentally The Cafe Royal, Lillywhite Dept Store and The Criterium Bar are all facing each other in London nr lower Regent Street, so wonder if that's where the author got the inspiration for the location/gang name. Laugh out laud funny at times. SO ENJOYABLE - postscript, 19 Nov 2020 since having this book, I've had several of the other books by this author, this is by far the best one.

I didn’t read the blurb fully before purchase so was initially surprised by all the sex scenes! Be warned if you are prudish. Very entertaining, the story developed well. Generally well read by narrator.
