Annette Hunt prefers staying home to going to social events, but her cousin talks her into attending a competition between some of the best minds in Chicago. He needs her to gather information that will help him catch a criminal, and he convinces her by saying, if she does well, it will be a big boost for the cause of women’s rights. With trepidation, she agrees, but is she in over her head?

I really like Annette, she's quietly smart, confident in her own abilities and unwilling to conform to social expectations of the time. She's not rude, just uninterested in the gossiping, the ladies groups and the husband hunting. She prefers books over people, despite this she's very good at reading people, which makes her very valuable to the investigation.
Unfortunately as great as the characters are, there are some bizarre plotlines and twists that overshadow those strong characters.
I listened to this on Audible, but this is also available on Kindle Unlimited.

A very mixed bag

This rather simplistic ‘christian’ romance was not really for me. Others may disagree and enjoy it.
I found the plot very easy to guess and the main week-long event was implausible on many different levels. Also the link to women’s suffrage was rather small.
Narration was clear although rather fast, and it would have been better to not attempt the Irish accent!!

Simplistic romance ….not for me
