Lennon Carter’s life is falling apart.

Until she gets a mysterious phone call inviting her to sit the entrance exam for somewhere few have heard of – Drayton College, a school of magic hidden in a secret pocket of Savannah.

Lennon doesn’t know it yet, but she is special. She possesses the innate gift of persuasion: the ability to wield her will like a weapon, controlling others, and even matter itself. But this is a devastating power than Lennon must learn how to master.

While persuasion takes a heavy toll on her body and her mind, she is captivated by all that surrounds her – her studies, Drayton’s lush campus and, most of all, Dante – the charismatic adviser who both intimidates and enamours her.

But the longer that Lennon spends at Drayton, learning to wield her uncanny abilities, the more she uncovers about Drayton’s unsettling history, and Dante’s tragic and violent past.

For it seems that the ultimate test is to embrace absolute power without succumbing to corruption and darkness . . . and it’s a test she’s terrified she is going to fail.

This darkly gorgeous story is a lavish feast for fans of gothic horror. One of my top reads of the year! (SUNYI DEAN, author of The Book Eaters)
The perfect blend of gothic horror and dark academia. It grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go until long after its final pages. Lennon’s is a vicious and gloriously unsettling tale of power, betrayal, and the bloody price of ambition. (FRANCESCA MAY, author of Wild and Wicked Things)
Alexis Henderson turns her incredible eye for the upsetting to academia, and delivers a campus novel saturated with violence, desire, and power. It's a book with blood on its lips, and I loved it completely. (ALIX E. HARROW, author of The Ten Thousand Doors of January)
A modern-day Anne Rice, Henderson has a gift for creating a world engorged with desire and death.
An Academy for Liars is propulsive, thought provoking, and sexy - Alexis Henderson is in a class of her own. (HANNAH WHITTEN, author of The Foxglove King)
Dark academia stunner infused with Henderson's signature style – it's lush, atmospheric, imaginative and impossible to put down. (RACHEL HARRISON, author of Cackle)
Perfect for the darker nights, this atmospheric novel is one for lovers of dark academia.

I’ve read The Year of the Witching and really enjoyed it. I was quite intrigued by the idea of this one, but it fell flat. There was danger and urgency, but I didn’t feel it. Not sure if it was the story or the narration, but it just didn’t gel with me. I also didn’t care about the characters particularly, with a small shout out exception to Gregory, the rat. I’m happy for others if they enjoyed it, I just endured it.

A good premise…

What was the reason for the first 3 chapters? Wasn't for me lol, so if there is a sequel I won't bother.

Just weird

Flat narrator
Not a single dimension to the characters, whom are only aged up to 25 to allow for a student/teacher sexual relationship.

Good god I only finished it because of the money exchanged

I was really looking forward to this book - I also have the hardback, but I like to have audiobooks as well. The story seemed interesting, and the chapters quite short and fast pacing, but the narrator was terrible. Her delivery was so slow and monotonous. I tried listening at 1.10 speed, but it still seemed stilted and unnatural. I DNF'd at chapter 4 and returned the book. I will be reading the hardback.

I thought I had it all figured out, but with twist after twist, I was wrong every single time. As always, Henderson really nails that gothic vibe that just hooks you right from the start.

I love that we’re diving right into Dark Academia with this one and it perfectly toes the line between the more believable parts of academia, and the fantastical elements. Its magic system is really unique too and manages to make the consequences of the magic believable and constantly present.

Lennon is such a relatable protagonist, and her journey is both gripping and thought-provoking. I knew Lennon was my girl when she casually compared someone to a rat, and it was only uphill from there. In fairness, all of the characters are really complex and well rounded, and you’ll find yourself second-guessing them and their intentions on and off as the story goes on.

Henderson has delivered yet another instant favourite for me, and I’m really excited to see what comes next.

The narrator is excellent and if you love a good mix of suspense, mystery, and a touch of the supernatural, this book is definitely worth picking up. Just be prepared for some late nights because you won’t want to stop it!

Any book that has me on the edge of my seat about the wellbeing of a rat is a win for me.
