When Laurence Fife was murdered, few mourned his passing. Plenty of people had reason to want him dead. But the police thought his wife Nikki--with motive, access and opportunity--was the #1 suspect. The jury thought so too.

Eight years later and out on parole, Nikki hires Kinsey Millhone, a gutsy P.I., to find the read killer. The trail is cold but Kinsey finds a lead. It brings her face-to-face with the murderer.

This is the first in the popular series featuring California investigator Kinsey Millhone. She's 32, twice divorced, no kids, an ex-cop who likes her work... and who works strictly alone. Modern Detectives Mystery Private Investigators Women Sleuths Kurgu Gerilim

I first read this book more than 20 years ago but thought I'd revisit on Audible. The book is just as good as I remembered, though perhaps a little dated now.

I love Kinsey Millhone - she's definitely in my Top Five of female detectives. She's fierce and independent, but a softie on the inside. She eats junk and her love life is a total mess. The plot was fast paced, and even though I'd read it before I still enjoyed the twists. Can't wait to get stuck into the next one.

I though Mary Peiffer did a great job with the narration and made Kinsey come to life.

Great book but ends a little abruptly. Could make the ending more detailed and finished.

Good read

Great murder mystery, unlike any I've read before. Loved the main character and hearing her inner thoughts and assessments of people. There were some great lines, like calling a dog a 'sissy' :-)
I'd recommend this book, I couldn't stop listening to it, and now I'm off to get the next one in the series..

Great main character

I read all of the alphabet series - Sue Grafton sadly died before writing Z - many years ago and now I am going to listen to the audiobooks. Kinsey Millhone is a great character, as are landlord Henry and his family who are in later novels. Every one of her novels is excellent and the narrator is very good.

One of my favourite authors

why is blasphemy necessary. surely you can find alternative descriptive words. so hard to know if a book will contain offensive language.

could have been a good story
