Özet

Brought to you by Penguin.

Magnus Pym - ranking diplomat, consummate Englishman, loving husband, secret agent - has vanished. Has he defected? Gone to ground? As the hunt for Pym intensifies, the secrets of his life are revealed: the people he has loved and betrayed, the unreliable con-man father who made him, the two mentors who moulded and shaped him, and now wish to claim this perfect spy as their own.

Described by le Carré as his most autobiographical novel, A Perfect Spy is a devastating portrayal of a man who has played different roles for so long, he no longer knows who he is.

'Le Carré understood that espionage is an extreme version of the human comedy, even the human tragedy. A Perfect Spy will very likely remain his greatest book' New Yorker

This is my favourite John Le Carre book. The portrait of of Pym and the world that he lives in and created him is masterful.

Timing and structure

This is a writer who knows his craft just as well as he knows his subject. The antihero is a tortured sociopath whose disturbed childhood, and ambivalent worship of his charismatic father, corrupts his ability to make relationships that are meaningful, decent or truthful. But Le Carre allows you to have sympathy for this monster, who is a victim of his upbringing and genetics, and whose adopted profession compounds his amorality.
The reader is first class, but you have to keep your wits about you to follow the twists and turns of this complex morality tale.

Memorable characters, beautifully written and well read - did not want to leave the achingly sad world Pym inhabited.

Heartbreaking insight into the making of poor Magnus
