A Life in Pieces is a literary novella by D. X. Lewis, told through 28 sharp, emotionally rich flash stories that piece together the life and background of Edward Newman from childhood to his imminent death. Moving between styles—from lyrical fairy tale to gritty realism, from humorous to melancholic—this genre-blending work offers a fresh, deeply human listening experience.

The story unfolds through multiple perspectives: a mother mourning love lost, a child discovering shame and wonder, and the quiet tragedies that shape generations. Each standalone story adds a layer to a larger narrative about family, memory, and identity. With themes ranging from first love to grief, abuse, and healing, A Life in Pieces balances dark undercurrents with humor, heart, and lyrical storytelling.

For listeners who enjoy literary fiction, family sagas, or experimental formats, this novella is both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant.

Perfect for fans of fragmented narratives, character-driven fiction, and bold storytelling that pushes boundaries.

This was my first novella in flash, recommended to me by a friend and I loved the succinct beauty of each of the ‘pieces.’ It was also very well read/performed. I would definitely recommend this!!!
