211 BC: Hannibal's struggle against the Romans in Italy continues, but the Carthaginians have been utterly defeated on Sicily. Fleeing the island to Spain, Hanno and Aurelia are shipwrecked, and taken prisoner by local tribesmen. Unless they escape, a life of slavery and brutal treatment awaits.

Aurelia's brother Quintus is posted with his comrades to Spain, where a new commander - Scipio - has been given the task of defeating the Carthaginian generals who hold sway over most of the peninsula.

Here, on the third front, there will be marches of incredible endurance, epic sieges and huge set piece battles. The very outcome of the war hangs in the balance.

Who will emerge victorious, Rome or Carthage? Only the gods can tell.

I love the author and the characters in the series...but the whole domination of Hanno and his wife and their relationship dominated the book...not a fan of that!

Not the best in the series

An excellent continuation of the story. I thoroughly enjoyed the situations Hanno and Quintus find themselves in, and having them on opposite sides of the conflict created incredible tension. The dynamic between Hanno and Aurelia was exceptionally well done, feeling completely relatable and realistic given their unique circumstances. Eagerly looking forward to the next instalment.

I have read nearly all of Ben Kanes books, he is a brilliant author. I think I will read this one as I am finding it hard to gel with the narration.

Narration not working for me.

I thought this was very good of all of Ben Kane books the only dumb side is the person reading the book. It’s just not quite the same as the man who read the previous three just wish it was the same person apart from that really enjoyed it.

Enjoyed a lot
