Newly widowed and desperate to protect her estate and beloved servants from her malevolent brother-in-law, Martha Russell conceives a daring plan. Or rather, a daring plan to conceive. After all, if she has an heir on the way, her future will be secured. Forsaking all she knows of propriety, Martha approaches her neighbor, a London exile with a wicked reputation, and offers a strictly business proposition: a month of illicit interludes... for a fee.

Theophilus Mirkwood ought to be insulted. Should be appalled. But how can he resist this siren in widow's weeds, whose offer is simply too outrageously tempting to decline? Determined she'll get her money's worth, Theo endeavors to awaken this shamefully neglected beauty to the pleasures of the flesh-only to find her dead set against taking any enjoyment in the scandalous bargain. Surely she can't resist him forever. But could a lady's sweet surrender open their hearts to the most unexpected arrival of all... love?

"Tantalizingly sexy, heartwarming, and oh-so funny, this romance is unforgettable; a stunning debut." ( Library Journal)

This is so, so well written. Such a wonderful surprise. It’s a modern and original take on the historical romance genre, which is no mean feat!! It’s spicy too, but in a way which is completely necessary within the storyline. I adored the progression of this relationship; I adored the realism of it, the wit, the excellent prose. If you like Lisa Kleypas or Judith Ivory or Loretta Chase, this would be a book for you, SO GOOD. Wish I could read it for the first time again. And I’m gutted Cecilia Grant doesn’t write anymore!

(Narrator’s pronunciation of British English was occasionally weird, so knocked a couple of stars off performance for that.)

Superb!

The end of the story is a bit disappointing, like the author lost the patience or run out of space on the page. Bit quick tbh

Quick end- dissapointing

Fabulous narration, perfect for this tale. English as spoke by the English elucidates the whims and whimsies of the intelligent MCs in hilarious fashion performing a charming and outrageous romp with such premise, unexpected and unencountered in this genre previously.

A cross between Georgette Heyer and Rosemary Rodgers in the details of farming and the purchase of seed, poor laws and enclosure of land. Serious and saucy, but practical.

I will for sure seek out other books by this author read by this narrator.

Great book, the story line was fantastic. After listening to countless romance audiobooks it feels like I never get anything new but this was certainly surprising. I didn't even mind the many sex scenes which I normally find tedious and more or less the same. The ending couldn't have been better. Would highly recommend.
