It's 1814, and Napoleon is hard-pressed to defend France from a combination of Russia, Prussia, Austria, and Britain. Nor is he the only one in a quandary.
Matthew Hervey, a young British cornet, is in a rather unusual situation. As far as he knows, it's highly irregular to be arrested on a battlefield after a successful action. Still, it's hardly the first time politics has interrupted war, and as Hervey's career progresses, he increasingly balances both, sometimes more successfully than others!©2000 Allan Mallinson (P)2000 W.F. Clever to make this included with audible, from the introduction focusing on historical fidelity and mentioning encouragement from Patrick O'Brien through the whole novel it was exactly my thing, slower paced and full of historical details, this novel may not appeal to those desperate for action at every turn but for those with a real taste for European history of the 1800s this is a treat.

Exactly my sort of novel, history lover's dream

An excellent story, exceptionally well researched. The narrator was wonderful, I’m going to follow Matthew Hervey!

As a fan of historical fiction I have enjoyed this book very much. in the 70s as a school boy, I first read c s Foersters hornblower books and find this in that vein. in latter yrs the books of Cornwall and scarrow among others have been my favourites, and the difference between them is one of rank. the writings contrast language of the street and that of an officer class which at the time of king george felt themselves superior.

an excellent listen

I loved the detail, some might find it slowed paced or too over detailed but for me I really enjoyed this. His wife input about horsemanship made it far superior to many such reads. Can’t wait for the next one…

Really enjoyed this!!
