In an encounter straight out of fiction, Katie might have met Mr Right on the long-haul flight from Melbourne to New York. Richard Sinclair is charming, handsome, wealthy, cultured—and married. In an open marriage, according to him. When he invites her to join him in his lush lakeside villa in Italy as his son’s au pair, it might just be the opportunity for a reset that Katie has been longing for.

The mansion at the edge of Lake Scanno is a romantic’s dream. But despite the perfect golden afternoons, tranquil waters and luxurious surrounds, all is not what it seems. In the nearby village, there are ominous rumblings about ghosts, drownings and the tragic fate of the women who came before her. What dark depths of obsession and betrayal will Katie uncover in this fairy-tale paradise? And when all the secrets and lies are unburied, will she be able to live with the devastating consequences of her choices?

Editorial Review

By chance, or with intent?
What’s better than a December mystery that transports you to a luxurious lakeside villa in Italy? Katie’s instant connection across the aisle of a long flight with Richard Sinclair initially feels like destiny. Richard is magnetic in every sense. The issue? He’s married, though he claims it’s open. After Katie accepts his invitation to work as his son’s au pair, village whispers spread about ghosts, drownings, and missing women at the Sinclair estate. As Katie uncovers what happened to the women who came before her, romance turns to dread. Chance brought her there, but the consequences will leave you questioning every coincidence. —Dawn G., Audible Editor

Refreshingly good

I wanted to like this book as an expat Aussie but the characters are not fully developed with understanding of their motivations or their actions. It seems very shallow - as a reader you’re left thinking, why would he or she act that way? There is no substance which makes it hard to care.

Frustrating waltz to nowhere

The blurb attempts to whip up mystery but really this book lacks any suspense. Any minor twists you see coming from miles and miles away and aren't that interesting. Some nice descriptions of Italian lakeside setting so if you're going on holiday to Como then it might be worth it otherwise don't bother.

Humdrum no thriller poor twists

Having heard a few of the titles from this author I was all set for another rollercoaster of a book. I did guess the correct ending quite early on but I found the route to get there was dreary. A disappointing second half, I think a lot more could have been made from it after the brilliant start.

Good start but lost momentum

Loved it. Gripping and a really good storyline, first book from this author and will be seeking out more. I couldn’t stop listening!
Great narration- what a talented narrator. 100% recommended.
