Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Nate moves into a new flat in a very strange apartment building. It seems that every apartment in the building is different and has something strange about it. There are the green cockroaches, the lift that has never worked, apartment 14 is padlocked, and many other strange oddities.

This was a wonderful book, with lots of twists and turns, and some fantastic ideas. And every time something new was revealed about the building I had a new theory about what was going on. I loved this book and will be looking for more books by Peter Clines.

Loved every minute of it.

Really great listen, highly recommended.

One of my favourite science fiction writers. A brilliant tale. Imaginative and engaging! The images come to life and the characters suspend all of my disbelief.

Excellent narration despite my aversion against American accented narration.

Thoroughly enjoyable!

It manages to hover above being poor and consigned to the DNF bin...only just . The escalating level of incredulity generated by the narrative is at times bewildering. Its lack of depth and treatment of science reminds me of old Victorian novels. While suspending belief is the stuff of scifi, this story takes it to a new level almost verging on stupidity. The main characters are so poorly fleshed out and developed that it does indeed harken back to the cartoon it so often makes reference to.
Not wanting to be racist I do find UK science fiction generally more intelligent and better written.

It walked a a thin line

The initial setup of the story was well done. But the story becomes quite dull as the discovery of the buildings secrets drags on. It then becomes a bit daft, which is forgivable. But the already unrealistic characters become even more so, and the list of stupid actions, cliched speech and lack of any logic becomes overwhelming.

A bit dull, then falls apart

This was truly a gripping story that held our attention and drew us in.The characters were believable and enjoyed the interaction between them. The only annoying part of the whole thing was the voice used for the alpha being.

Very Enjoyable.
