100 fathoms below....

The depth at which sunlight no longer penetrates the ocean.

1983. The US nuclear submarine USS Roanoke embarks on a classified spy mission into Soviet waters. Their goal: to find evidence of a new, faster, and deadlier Soviet submarine that could tip the balance of the Cold War. But the Roanoke crew isn't alone. Something is on board with them. Something cunning and malevolent.

Trapped in enemy territory and hunted by Soviet submarines, tensions escalate and crew members turn on each other. When the lights go out and horror fills the corridors, it will take everything the crew has to survive the menace coming from outside and inside the submarine.

In the dark.

Combining Tom Clancy's eye for international intrigue with Stephen King's sense of the macabre, 100 Fathoms Below takes listeners into depths from which there is no escape.

Claustrophobic, tense fun and full of characters you genuinely don't want to die. Great narration. The characters don't tend to make stupid decisions, since their actions are driven by necessity due to the confines of the submarine. They're resourceful and as a science teacher, I loved the light bulb moment about a way to potentially harm their seemigly invincible adversaries. however once everyone knows what's actually going on I feel it loses the horror aspect and turns into more of a clunky action flick. Still a great deal of fun though.

OK - so one can imagine being in a confined space with a malevolent force but this novel really does stretch credibility. Can say very little without spoilers so I am not going there - but it kept me entertained for a few hours.

Overall this was a fun listen, it had plenty of vampires and kept the suspense going. Characters were well created and the whole thing kept you listening. Credulity was stretched in a few places as a few members of the crew survived when I was sure they wouldn't, being saved in the nick of time, but if they had not been, then the story would have been much shorter. Taken for what it is - a light read and fun. I enjoyed the narrator too - I had not heard him before but he did a good job.

A fun listen

Not expecting much I was pleasantly surprised, nice twist on the genre with some clever gotchas.

Surprisingly fun
