To the outside world, they look like American royalty, giving to charities, feeding the homeless, and rebuilding the city. But behind closed doors is a constant battle for dominance between two bosses, cultures, and hearts. Ruthless People is a romantic crime fiction set in modern day Chicago and follows the life and marriage of Melody Giovanni and Liam Callahan - rivals by blood and leaders through fear. Their marriage was arranged by their fathers in hopes to end years of bloodshed between the Irish and the Italians. Liam believes he's getting a simple-minded wife, one he can control, one who bends to his every need...the complete opposite of Melody. She knows exactly what type of man he is and would rather die than give up the power she has spent her life building. The mafia of the past has evolved, and with rival bosses gunning for them, Melody and Liam will have to learn to work as one to take down those who stand in their way.

The characters are so unique, each has their own style. The storyline is farfetched so don't come here expecting booker prize material! However it's fun, I literally laughed out loud on several occasions. The banter and chemistry between Liam and Mel is electric.. let's just say both are boss material. I'll definitely listen to the next instalment

This book fully utilises the narrator’s ability. A fantastic book and a fantastic narrator is UNMATCHED. Kinda enemies to lovers, marriage of convenience, super spicy, he’s fall’s first, she’s the mastermind. JJ McAvoy you killed this whole genre

Perfection

I have had this book in my library for over a year, I just didn't feel like a dark mafia story. This is so much better than I expected it to be - the narration was excellent, there were a lot of accents to get down and Joel pulled it off, probably one of the best American narrators out there.
The story though blood thirsty had me laughing hard in places, I will definitely be recommending this book to whoever will listen to me.
