A riveting dystopian nightmare that’s Blake Crouch meets Silent Hill, in which a woman finds herself jailed in a subterranean fortress, and must fight for her sanity and survival.

****Goodreads Choice Award Finalist****

Buried deep below the everyday life of our society lives an underground world of nightmares—of violence and murder no one dares speak about. Contracts and laws weave the web of our culture together. Our Masters walk amongst us. They can be our friends, or the ones to make us disappear forever.

Where I once had found peace within my existence, it all ended with the death of my cruel, yet caring owner. My world shattered and I was taken back to the one place I had hoped to never see again—the cells of Whitlock—a subterranean fortress for slaves who await their new placement.

Now I have no rights. I have no say. My feelings and wellbeing are meaningless. Escape is impossible, but I have nothing left to lose.

To stand any chance of survival, I must give my life as collateral to the highest bidder: Soul for Sale. slave 24690 Dystopian Horror Psychological Science Fiction Thriller & Suspense

I wasn't sure I would be able to finish this book but I did! Although I don't have any triggers especially, this was gory and so descriptive - nothing I expected.
At the start there was some slight confusion with the similarities between the characters' voices.

One of the most horrific books I've read in a long time

This book have been on my TBR for a while but due to reviews I was a little reluctant to start it, not knowing if I was in the right frame of mind for the brutality and darkness of this book, characters and world. However I decided to take the dive through audio and Wow! This book is dark, there is a romance element but it is NOT a dark romance. The core is pure unadulterated, unhinged villains of society. The world is pitch black! The story its self was enthralling, super dark and full of dangerous complexed characters. Though the story is well told, for me it still feels incomplete. I am interested in reading the other books in this world.

Not what I expected, but so good

It was confusing trying to understand who was who as very little difference in voice and female was also the male

The story

I agree when others mention there not being enough difference in the voices, however, the performance was brilliant and believable enough that I didn’t care. Each chapter let you know who was telling it and that was good enough for me.
The story itself, absolutely incredible, you keep thinking things could improve and another hit comes, I’m so impressed. It’s been a long time since I have been enthralled throughout. I’m a serial returner of audiobooks, this one is a definite keeper.
I truly recommend!! Can’t wait for the next one!

This was dark, has a handmaid's tale vibe but much darker. The narrators draw you straight in, both their voices are perfect for the roles. I loved this story, I'm straight onto the next one!
