The Ottoman Sultan called for a "Great Jihad" against the Entente powers at the start of the First World War. When the establishment of the State of Israel was announced on May 14, 1948, it seemed to many people that the new nation could not survive for long. In October 1918, Faisal, Lawrence, and the Arabs victoriously entered Damascus, where they declared a constitutional government in an independent Greater Syria. At the Paris Peace Conference, Faisal won the support of President Woodrow Wilson.
