The American War

They thought it was a surprise attack. It wasn't.

December 1941. Six carriers. Four hundred aircraft. The most carefully planned naval operation in history, aimed at a Pacific Fleet that was supposed to be sleeping.

It isn't sleeping.

In the basement of the 14th Naval District, Ensign Michael Voss finds something in Japan's radio silence. A pattern that shouldn't exist. His discovery reaches the Oval Office, and a President who has been watching the Pacific for two years knows exactly what it means.

Roosevelt makes a decision. America will be ready.

Pearl Harbor becomes a trap. Battleship Row bristles with anti-aircraft guns. P-38 Lightnings crowd the airfields, flown by pilots who know what the Zero can and cannot do. Submarines take position in the approaches. And in the White House Map Room, a President waits.

Yamamoto's carriers are still coming. His pilots still believe they have surprise.

They have no idea what is waiting at thirty thousand feet.

From the flagship Akagi to Station HYPO. From Corregidor to the flight decks of American carriers racing west. From a young fighter pilot named Jack Gibson climbing into his P-38 before dawn to the commanders who know the next few hours will decide the next four years.

A Date with Infamy is the story of the day that was supposed to break America. It didn't. But stopping the attack is only the beginning. What America does with the morning after is a different kind of war entirely.
