Dr. Sonny “Sully” Sullivan knows how to help—until the right way stops working. An old friend drops in with a son who’s burned through every intervention. An abused daughter refuses the part she’s been assigned. The psych unit hums with alarms and fluorescent mercy, and the therapist who knows the rules begins to cross them—one small, human step at a time.

I wanted to be a distance god. There. I said it. I would've broken out of the lead pack and surged away, thrown down some impossible splits, devastated the elites as I stretched my lead, merciless, alone...almost floating. The field would've strung out and withered behind me as I burned and buried the best runners on the face of the planet. I would've become immortal. Was that too much to ask? See, running consumed me - sometimes like love, sometimes like cancer.

What if second best was the only way to find yourself? Also-Ran is a raw, voice-driven gut punch about surviving in second place. Sully’s tortured and half-drowning in family wreckage—Dad’s a mess, Mom keeps vanishing into psych wards, and the neighborhood feels like it’s waiting to give him a beat down. Meanwhile his best friend Ash is breaking track records in the high-altitude of Albuquerque, and four-foot tall Sloan is the only girl who sees through Sully’s crap—but she’s running out of patience. He scrapes for scraps of self-worth in a world that’s already stamped him as runner-up.
