Originally, this talk was entitled "The United States in the Middle East: Confronting Syria." It was the second of three lectures sponsored by the Lebanese Club at MIT. Chomsky did not want to limit the talk to this one subject.

Noam Chomsky spoke to nearly 1,300 concerned citizens about the invasion and occupation of Iraq and the implications for U.S. foreign policy. Chomsky began with a review and analysis of the State of the Union Address and other necessary allusions. He wondered aloud when the U.S. will become a part of the world justice system instead of outside it. Chomsky pointed out how the U.S. government had opened a Pandora's Box with their loose interpretation of pre-emptive strike.
