Every Monday, I meet my writing group in a warm, lively bar to drink a glass of wine or two and share our work. It’s the highlight of my week. I don’t go out much, otherwise. For the last ten years, every time I’ve relaxed, the messages have started again. The black hearts. They’re a warning to remember, as if I could ever forget. Whoever sent them wants to hurt me. They’ve lost me jobs and boyfriends. Is it any wonder I like to hide in fiction?

Every October, the school where I work takes a trip to a local farm to pet the animals and search for the perfect Halloween pumpkin. This year is even more special, as my daughter, Claire, is coming. She’s so excited, and we really need some fun time together after what we’ve been through.

I’d heard of the Baby Caroline case, of course. When a baby is snatched from her mother’s arms, the whole country knows about it. I knew about the parents left lying by the swimming pool, the open window in the nursery. But I never dreamed it had anything to do with me. Today, my beautiful daughter turned one. We were unwrapping gifts and blowing out candles when the knock came at the door, and they took my mother away. The police say she’s not really my mother. That she stole me, 30 years ago.

A year ago, someone broke into our home. He stood outside our bedroom, with our children asleep down the corridor, and knocked on the door. But the worst moment came later, when I found out who had nearly destroyed my family, and why. Now my husband has booked us a surprise vacation. In a beautiful cabin on the shore we will rest, talk, recover. But I can’t relax. When I drive to the store, or stroll down the beach, I am always looking over my shoulder, my heart racing. Because no matter how hard my husband tries to pretend, we both know it’s not over.

ZROBIŁABYM WSZYSTKO, BY CHRONIĆ SWOJE DZIECI. TO MOJA WINA, ŻE SĄ W NIEBEZPIECZEŃSTWIE... Nasz dom wakacyjny jest piękny. Z pastelowoniebieskimi ścianami, basenem na zewnątrz i promenadą ciągnącą się aż do brzegu. Moje dzieci bawią się w falach, a mój mąż grilluje hamburgery na pokładzie. Jest tak spokojnie. Ale nie mogę się zrelaksować. Kiedy jadę do sklepu lub spaceruję po plaży, zawsze oglądam się przez ramię, a serce mi wali. Szukam go. Człowieka, który rok temu prawie wszystko zniszczył z powodu sekretów, które skrywałam.

Mają niewłaściwą osobę. Popełnili błąd. Policja bez przerwy myli tropy, prawda? Mówią o tym w każdym filmie dokumentalnym. Nie ma mowy, żeby moja matka, jedyny rodzic, jakiego kiedykolwiek miałam, mogła zrobić coś tak potwornego. Moja matka jest troskliwa. Myśli o innych. Wszystkich stawia przed sobą, a mnie przede wszystkim. Nie jest typem osoby, która mogłaby zrobić coś takiego. CZY CAŁE MOJE ŻYCIE JEST KŁAMSTWEM? Muszę poznać prawdę. Ale im więcej wiem, tym bardziej jestem przerażona.
