E.T.A. Hoffmann's The Nutcracker and the Mouse King is one of the most beloved children's stories of all time and a Christmas classic. The story is the basis for the popular ballet "The Nutcracker." In the story, a young girl named Marie is given a precious nutcracker as a Christmas present by her godfather, the enigmatic Drosselmeier. When the nutcracker is broken, Marie attempts to repair it and stays up late to tend to her new toy, but when the nursery is invaded by an army of mice, the nutcracker comes to life to both drive off the mice and escort Marie to a magical land of living dolls.

Er findet hinter einer Tapetentür in seinem Hotelzimmer einen Geheimgang, der in eine Opernloge führt. Als er durch die Hauptstraße Berlins spazierte, falt ihm ein altes, nur notdürftig unterhaltenes Haus auf, das zwischen zwei prächtigen Gebäuden steht. Die Geschichte handelt von Nathanael, der seit seiner Kindheit von der Angst vor einer unheimlichen Figur namens Sandmann verfolgt wird. Bei einem dieser Experimente stirbt Nathanaels Vater, was Nathanael tief traumatisiert.

E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) was a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror as well as a jurist, composer, music critic, draftsman and caricaturist. His stories were highly influential during the 19th century, and he is one of the major authors of the Romantic movement. 'The Cremona Violin' is the story of Councillor Krespel, an eccentric violin maker who lives with a mysterious woman, Antonia, who has the most beautiful singing voice ever heard by anyone in the town, but she was only ever heard to sing once.
