Casi veinte años después de la publicación de El vientre de la ballena, Javier Cercas, convertido ya en uno de los escritores fundamentales del panorama europeo, asumió un reto fascinante: revisar el libro del novelista que fue, enfrentarse a sus propios orígenes.

Los temas centrales de El móvil -la vocación literaria, la responsabilidad del escritor y los límites de su ética, las relaciones sutiles e inextricables entre lo real y lo inventado- son temas a los que Cercas ha vuelto una y otra vez, de formas más o menos intensas o reconocibles, en sus novelas siguientes, algunas de las cuales se hallan prefiguradas en este libro, como si fueran desarrollos de semillas enterradas en él.
