Prince John is plotting to seize the throne from his brother, Richard the Lion-Hearted, and Robin Hood and his merry band are making fools out of the Sheriff of Nottingham. Wilfred, knight of Ivanhoe, the son of Cedric the Saxon, is in love with his father’s ward, Rowena. Cedric, however, wishes her to marry Athelstane, a descendant of the royal Saxon line, whom Cedric hopes will restore the Saxon succession.

Romanen utspelar sig i Ayrshire och Lanarkshire runt 1306, kort efter William Wallaces död under de skotska frihetskrigen. Lady Augusta har lovat att gifta sig med Sir John de Walton om han kan behålla kontrollen över slottet som han erövrade för ett år och en dag sedan. Hon ångrar dock sitt löfte och reser till slottet i förklädnad för att försöka bryta överenskommelsen. Walter Scott (1771-1832) var en skotsk skald och författare. Scott är känd för att ha skapat den historiska romangenren.
