Memory is slipping, fragments of life dissolve into dream and silence. In Derek Oldfield’s The Silence of Melting, a restless speaker moves across moors, cliff-top benches, hospital wards, and Tangier avenues, collecting small, stubborn moments: a bird at a frost-edged window, a mint-crystal table under jasmine petals, a lamppost that leans awkwardly. Each lyric tries to name what’s fading —love, grief, and the outline of a self —using plain, uncanny images and spare, urgent lines.

Out of the Silence not only offers a rare insight into one man's experience in the throes of a bitter conflict of the past; it also bears witness to the enduring power of forgiveness, truth and reconciliation in the face of adverse forces still at work in the world today.

Don't cry my dear. Your tears are seen. Your eyes are blurry. Please wipe them away. In a hurry. No need to cry. No need to worry, my dear. Don't overthink the story.

Here is the poetic language I needed to write of the silence lived after the loss of my mother, a time of sorrow and absence, of dealing with material things, which led to walking the Camino de Santiago for the first time a year after losing her. I dedicate these poems to all who have lost loved ones, to their acceptance, and necessary transformation.

Kathryn Stripling Byer - When she died suddenly from lymphoma in June 2017, Kathryn Stripling Byer had just completed her seventh, and what would be her last, collection of poetry, Trawling the Silences. It is a book of great beauty and heartbreak, revisiting all her important themes - family and ancestry, the natural world, the inevitable process of aging and death, and the pressing issues of environmental degradation, racism, and international conflict - with an urgency that seems, in retrospect, to have come from an awareness about what fate awaited her.

This is the story of a unique generation of violins. It begins in the silence of snow-filled forests and brings us to the chatter and traffic of a 21st-century city. It is the story of their maker, Antonio Stradivari, the sparkling young prodigy who did his greatest work late in life, lifting music from the silence of all he had lost. This author uses words as a sculptor uses clay. She doesn't change the shape of the word; it's the surrounding words that contain the poetic surprise. She explains that she personally likes to be surprised by a word that doesn't usually follow another. It is a way to startle the listener into looking deeper into the thought. There are times when words can even pour forth like oil and fill in cracks left by others' hurtful words. Some of these poetic frames become like a waterfall of individual poems that wash off aching bodies and refreshes the spirit.
