Half the world was a mistake. She was the correction. Elara Vance is a brilliant, overlooked microbiology student with a jagged heart and a terrifying specialty: the genetic deconstruction of the male sex. Driven by a lifetime of systemic trauma and a radicalized belief that the "noise" of the patriarchy is a biological infection, she engineers the Vance-1 Strain—a molecular scythe designed to target and "unzip" the Y chromosome. Keeping on top of the family funeral directors' and private-investigation businesses is no easy task for the Skelf women, and when matriarch Dorothy discovers a human foot while walking the dog, a perplexing case presents itself. Prof is an ex-prisoner, activist and retired academic, who resolves to live a life of darkness after his release from prison. He holes up in his apartment, pushing away friends and family, and embraces his status as an urban legend in the neighborhood until a knock at the door shakes his existence. His visitor is Desire, an orphan and final year student, who has grown up idolizing Prof, following a fateful encounter in her hometown of Maroko, Nigeria as a child. Tentatively, the two begin to form a bond, as she returns every night at 9 p.m. to see him.

While Jovan experiences the fruits of the hustle during his partner’s first stint, Bilal humbly does his time like a true soldier, taking a manslaughter charge for his one true friend. When these two are finally reunited on the streets, a chain of events lands them both behind bars facing multiple charges.
