Mr. Watson is a widowed and ailing clergyman with two sons and four daughters. The youngest daughter, Emma, the heroine of the story, has been brought up by a wealthy aunt and is consequently better educated and more refined than her sisters. But after her aunt contracted a foolish second marriage, Emma has been obliged to return to her father's house. There she is chagrined by the crude and reckless husband-hunting of two of her sisters, Penelope and Margaret.

"The Watsons" is a story about a family of four sisters and their relationships and interactions with each other and with the people in their community. The main character is Emma Watson, who has been raised by a wealthy aunt and is now returning home to live with her father and stepmother. The novel explores themes of social class, family dynamics, and courtship. Although the novel is unfinished, it still offers valuable insights into Austen's writing style and the themes that are present in her completed works.

The coming-of-age genre is full of the corpses of good dogs. Where the Red Fern Grows, Old Yeller, Marley and Me, Endurance, White Fang, and even the Odyssey sacrifice dogs to character arc. But not this one. The dog in this book lives to a ripe old age. The fate of the other characters however, cannot be guaranteed.
