Practice Japanese with useful everyday phrases for “wear” and “take off.”

In Japanese, we use different verbs depending on what you are wearing or taking off.

For example:

• fuku o kimasu — 服を着ます
• kutsu o hakimasu — 靴を履きます
• boushi o kaburimasu — 帽子をかぶります
• megane o kakemasu — メガネをかけます
• masuku o shimasu — マスクをします
• nekuresu o tsukemasu — ネックレスをつけます

In this practice episode, you’ll practice different everyday patterns, including:

〜してください〜してね〜したほうがいいですよ〜しています〜してる？

Round 1: Listen and repeat.
Round 2: Listen to the English, think of the Japanese, and answer after a short pause.

Listen and practice as many times as you need. You don’t have to remember everything the first time!

In this episode, we continue from the previous episode about “wear” and “put on” in Japanese.

In English, we often use “take off,” but in Japanese, the verb changes depending on what you take off.

👕 fuku o nugu
👖 kutsu o nugu
🧢 boushi o toru
👓 megane o hazusu
😷 masuku o hazusu / toru
💍 nekkuresu o hazusu

Nihongo de wa, “take off” wa itsumo “nugu” janai!

Kono you na kotoba wa, rule wo kangaeru yori, phrase no pair de oboeru no ga osusume desu.

For example:

fuku o kiru → fuku o nugu
kutsu o haku → kutsu o nugu
boushi o kaburu → boushi o toru
megane o kakeru → megane o hazusu

English uses wear or put on, but Japanese changes the verb depending on what you’re wearing.

Learn the most natural expressions that Japanese people use every day!

• Fuku o kite! (Get dressed!)
• Kyou wa nani o kite imasu ka?
• Kutsu o haite kudasai.
• Boushi o kabutte ne.
• Megane o kakete imasu ka?
• Masuku o shite kudasai.
• Kawaii necklace o tsukete imasu ne.

💡 Instead of memorizing single verbs, memorize the pairs!

• Fuku × kiru
• Kutsu × haku
• Boushi × kaburu
• Megane × kakeru
• Masuku × suru
• Necklace × tsukeru

In this episode, you will practice sentences like:

Disneyland ni takusan hito ga imashita.
(There were many people at Disneyland.)

Hanabi taikai ni takusan hito ga imashita.
(There were many people at the fireworks festival.)

Kinou ie ni imashita.
(I was at home yesterday.)

Eki no chikaku ni pan-ya ga arimashita.
(There was a bakery near the station.)

Kouen no tonari ni ookii chuushajou ga arimashita.
(There was a big parking lot next to the park.)

We will practice there was / there were in Japanese.

First, listen and repeat.
Then, try to answer by yourself.

Today’s episode is the continuation of EP75:
there is / there are in Japanese.

In this episode, we will learn the past forms:

• imashita = there was / there were (for people and animals)
• arimashita = there was / there were (for things)

For example:

「kouen ni takusan hito ga imashita.」
There were many people in the park.

「kouen no tonari ni ookii chuushajou ga arimashita.」
There was a big parking lot next to the park.

We will practice how to describe places and situations in the past.

Remember:
Japanese does not change the verb depending on singular or plural.
The same idea as います / あります also applies to いました / ありました.
