In today’s episode, we’re talking about Omurice, a popular Japanese dish made with ketchup rice wrapped in an omelet!

First, I’ll tell you a short story about Omurice in simple Japanese. Try to understand as much as you can!

Then, we’ll look at a useful Japanese expression:

✨ 〜っぽい (-ppoi) — -ish / -like

For example:

• ようしょくっぽい — Western-style / Western-like
• こどもっぽい — childish
• にほんっぽい — Japanese-like

Finally, I’ll read the English translation so you can check your understanding.

Let’s practice Japanese! 🇯🇵

In the last episode, we learned the difference between あげる (ageru), もらう (morau), and くれる (kureru).

Now it’s time to practice!

In this episode, I’ll say a sentence in English, give you a few seconds to think, and then reveal the Japanese sentence.

We’ll practice with different people, including friends, family members, and teachers.

You’ll learn to use:

🎁 あげる (ageru) — to give

🎁 もらう (morau) — to receive or get

🎁 くれる (kureru) — when someone gives something to you or someone on your side

We’ll also compare different ways to describe the same event and practice understanding whose point of view we’re using.

Don’t worry if these three verbs are confusing at first! Take your time, think about the sentence, and try saying it out loud.

Ageru, morau, and kureru — do you know the difference? 🇯🇵

These three Japanese verbs can be confusing, especially because English uses “give” in situations where Japanese uses different verbs.

In this episode, we’ll look at the basic meanings and sentence patterns of:

🎁 あげる (ageru) — to give

🎁 もらう (morau) — to receive or get

🎁 くれる (kureru) — to give something to me or someone on my side

For example:

ともだちに プレゼントを あげました。
I gave a present to my friend.

むすめは ともだちから プレゼントを もらいました。
My daughter got a present from her friend.

ともだちが むすめに プレゼントを くれました。
My friend gave my daughter a present.

We’ll explore how the point of view changes depending on who gives the present and who receives it.

Don’t worry if these verbs feel confusing at first! This episode focuses on understanding the basic ideas. In the next episode, we’ll practice using them with lots of examples.

Do you get confused about Japanese particles like wa, ga, o, ni, and de? 🇯🇵

You might know what each particle means, but when you try to make longer sentences, it’s easy to get confused!

In this episode, I’ll share a simple way to practice Japanese particles by using sentence patterns.

We’ll practice combining:

🕒 Time + は (wa)

👫 Person + と (to)

📍 Place + で (de)

🎯 Destination + に／へ (ni / e)

☕ Object + を (o)

And finally, the verb!

We’ll also practice changing the verb to talk about the past, everyday habits, the future, and actions happening right now.

For example:

きのうは、つまとカフェでコーヒーをのみました。

Yesterday, I drank coffee at a café with my wife.

Instead of memorizing grammar rules one by one, learn a basic sentence pattern and practice it again and again until it becomes automatic.

Let’s make Japanese sentence building easier and more natural!

Have you ever watched a basketball game in Japan? 🏀🇯🇵

In this episode, I talk about my daughter’s recent basketball tournament and share some useful Japanese words you might hear at a game!

You’ll learn how Japanese people shorten basketball to basuke, along with basketball vocabulary like sentaa (center), gaado (guard), ofensu (offense), and difensu (defense).

I’ll also teach you some common Japanese cheers, including:

🏀 Ganbare! — Do your best!
🏀 Hashire! — Run!
🏀 Mae mite! — Look ahead!
🏀 Naisu shuuto! — Nice shot!

Plus, we’ll learn useful sports words like toonamento (tournament), jun-kesshou (semifinal), kesshou (final), and yuushou (winning the championship).

And guess what? My daughter’s elementary school team won the B-team tournament! 🎉

You can use many of these words when talking about other sports, too.
