On October 26, 2018, a single text message set off a police response, a CPS case, and two felony charges against Midland ISD teacher Megan McMurry. On the phone that day, Officer Alex Weaver called it an "anonymous tip." In audio she later recorded and sent to people (February 2024), she named the source. And that source, former Abell counselor Tracy Rickerson, later signed a sworn affidavit describing that morning very differently.

In Episode 4 of the McMurry Saga, I go through bodycam of both phone calls between Officer Weaver and Megan, Weaver's own recorded explanation, the 10/24/2018 staff email, Tracy Rickerson's sworn affidavit, and what the court filings say about the text that was never produced. The defense's position is included too.

Note: A federal jury found both officers violated the McMurry family's constitutional rights (March 2026). The case is on appeal at the Fifth Circuit (Nos. 26-50541 / 26-50822), and the officers' briefs are due 11/30/2026. Statements in this video are attributed to their sources. On October 26, 2018, two Midland ISD police officers knocked on the door of 14-year-old Jade McMurray. She was home alone while her mom, Megan, was overseas, and a neighbor was checking on her and her 12-year-old brother every day. The officers called it a "welfare check." Jade was fine. They searched the kitchen anyway, told her not to text her mom, put her in the back of a squad car and drove her to a school she doesn't even attend.

In this recap of Parts 1, 2 and 3, I walk through the bodycam footage from a cop's perspective: the door, the search, the phone call where the lieutenant calls it "a criminal offense," and the squad car ride. CPS later found the kids were fine. Charges were filed against Megan anyway, and the family has been fighting it for more than eight years.

I support law enforcement when it's justified, and I call it out when it's justified.
