About this listen

Unexplained is a haunting and unsettling bi-weekly podcast about strange and mysterious real life events that continue to evade explanation. A story-based show mixing spoken-word narrative, history and ideas - often to terrifying effect - that explores the space between what we think of as real and what is not; where sometimes belief can be as concrete as ‘reality,’ whatever that is…

    Jan 9 2026

It's almost inconceivable that, with the advancement of technology and the normalisation of surveillance, someone could suddenly appear in a well-populated town with no trace of who they are or where they came from.

And yet, that’s exactly what happened in 2009, during one strange summer in a picturesque seaside town in the west of Ireland…

  • Season 06 Episode 11: Slide Away (RERUN)
    Jan 2 2026

With unexplained on a short break for the holiday season we’ll be dipping back into the archive for one more week.

In this week’s episode we return to Bennington, Vermont, where between 1945–1950, four people vanished without trace in an area dubbed the Bennington Triangle, so called, because of the many strange and weird occurrences said to have taken place there.

In 1946, 18-year-old Paula Jean Weldon became the second of those four people to disappear, in a case one investigator described as the most baffling he ever came across.

    Dec 26 2025

With unexplained on a short break for the holiday season we’ll be dipping back into the archive for the next two weeks.

On Friday January 23rd 1959, a story begins from out of the foothills of the Ural Mountains.

A story that is perhaps the most extraordinary of all the stories ever featured on the show.

Some call it the Dyatlov Pass Incident.

You might know it as Unexplained Season 2 Episode 4, When The Snow Melts...

a real stand out piece of work in a genre where the is so much noise and hyperbole. this is the perfect antidote - fascinating tales of mystery and the bizzare, thoroughly researched and thoughtfully presented in an unhurried, relaxed and almost hypnotic manner. I particularly enjoyed the backing music that goes with each episode and look forward to winding down at the end of the day with the dulcet tones of RMS. a real treat .

fascinating, thoughtful and understated mystery podcast perfect for night time listening

Nice to hear a presenter who treats the subject matter with the respect it deserves, opposed to someone who is seemingly jacked up on red bull. Take a bow RMS.

Superb stories and narrative. Ads suck……..

I read the book, and was so excited to find it was based on a podcast. But wth! Why does he talk like he’s reading the time?! He sounds so bored. It’s really a big shame. The first episode was fine but it just changed to this weird voice. It is very distracting and now I can’t understand the story. It’s a no from me.

Why does he talk like this?

i love how Richard expands on any given story of the week and we get to hear about pop culture references, philosophy, metaphysics - it's not just about the thrilling story, but about what these stories and events tell us about ourselves. there is so much care put into how these stories are told too in the podcast

one or my favourite podcasts
