We will examine four defining locations, North Africa and the Siege of Tobruk, the bombing of Darwin, the fall of Malaya and Singapore, and the Kokoda campaign, and evaluate their historical significance, including the contested question of what Kokoda achieved strategically.

This episode continues AC9HH10K01: the causes, outbreak and course of the Second World War and the significance of Australian involvement. Building on Episode 1's examination of interwar instability and Hitler's rise, Episode 2 traces the major international crises between 1931 and 1941 that contributed to the outbreak and global expansion of war.

We will explore Manchuria, Abyssinia, the Spanish Civil War, the Anschluss, Munich, the invasion of Poland, and Pearl Harbor, and examine why the League of Nations and the policy of appeasement both failed to prevent it.
