  • Bryan & Sarah Baeumler Take Over Port Alberni & Firefighters Fill the Boot for the D69 Food Bank
    28 Oct 2026
"Send us a text about this episode!"Why You Should Listen to This Episode: Bryan and Sarah Baeumler take us behind the scenes of Home Town Takeover Canada in Port Alberni, from eight local changemakers to a covered gathering space at Harbour Quay, with a detour through a foggy Nova Scotia proposal and a hurricane-rerouted honeymoon. Parksville firefighter Liam Robinson and Craig Bay Food Drive coordinator Penny Rutherford explain who relies on the Salvation Army Food Bank, what it needs on its shelves, and where to find the boots on November 14 and 15.This Episode Features:(29:25) Bryan and Sarah Baeumler have spent nearly two decades on Canadian and American television, from Disaster DIY and House of Bryan to Renovation Island and their Bahamian resort, Caerula Mar Club. This summer they brought HGTV's Home Town Takeover Canada to Port Alberni, the first Canadian town to get the treatment, renovating for eight local changemakers, working alongside the Tseshaht and Hupacasath First Nations and building what Bryan calls the most epic covered gathering space on the West Coast at Harbour Quay. They also tell Peter how Bryan proposed on a fogged-in drive to Canso, Nova Scotia, why their honeymoon ended up in Las Vegas, and the DIY mistake Bryan still sees over and over again. www.citytvplus.ca(06:25) Liam Robinson of the Parksville Volunteer Fire Department and Penny Rutherford, coordinator of the Craig Bay Food Drive, talk with Dave about the growing need at the Salvation Army Food Bank in District 69, which recorded 20,982 service visits last year. Since 1998 the firefighters' Fill the Boot drive has collected roughly 430,000 pounds of food and about $660,000, and Craig Bay's 427 homes have added more than $334,000 and 22,400 pounds of groceries over the past 11 or so years. Firefighters will be out Saturday, November 14 (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and Sunday, November 15 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) at Tim Hortons, Thrifty Foods, Quality Foods and the BC Liquor Store at Wembley Mall, plus Canadian Tire and Save-On-Foods on Saturday. www.parksvillesalvationarmy.ca/services/food-bankEpisode Quotes:"I don't know where the bigger impact was, whether it was on the town or whether the town had the bigger impact on us." - Bryan Baeumler, Host, Home Town Takeover Canada"The stigma around asking for help needs to fade, because the cost of living has made asking for help unavoidable."- Penny Rutherford, Coordinator, Craig Bay Food DriveThe PULSE Community Podcast is a weekly Vancouver Island podcast hosted by Peter McCully and Dave Graham, featuring conversations with musicians, authors, actors, athletes, business leaders and community builders from Vancouver Island, British Columbia and beyond. • The Abyss - Avatar’s Freediving Coach Kirk Krack of Campbell River on James Cameron’s Underwater Epic
    28 Oct 2026
"Send us a text about this episode!"What happens when you revisit James Cameron’s most punishing production with the man who taught the cast of Avatar: The Way of Water how to hold their breath? You get one of the deepest conversations Too Old or Movie Gold has ever had - literally.Host Olen Vanderleeden of the Comox Valley and Gen X co-host Matthew Stockton are joined by Millennial sci-fi enthusiast Sean, Gen Z panelist and self-described rat rights activist Nicole, and special guest Kirk Krack of Campbell River, founder of Performance Freediving International. Kirk has trained world champions, military special operations teams and Hollywood stars in breath-hold diving, including Tom Cruise and Rebecca Ferguson for Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, Margot Robbie for Suicide Squad, and the Avatar cast, from Kate Winslet to Sigourney Weaver. The 1989 film starring Ed Harris, Michael Biehn and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is personal for Kirk. He became a dive instructor months before it came out, moved to the Cayman Islands (where the story is set) the year it was released, and later went on to work for Cameron, help develop underwater habitats, and join a working group studying real-world liquid breathing. So when the panel’s skeptics call it a bad movie with good ideas, Kirk tells them they’re “way out of your depth” and walks through just how technically accurate the film really is.The panel dives into the brutal CPR scene, the groundbreaking water tentacle effects that paved the way for Terminator 2, the 7.5-million-gallon set built inside a nuclear reactor housing in South Carolina, and a shoot so gruelling the cast nicknamed it “The Abuse.” Kirk compares working with Cameron to helping Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel, and shares stories of spending five days to capture three seconds of underwater footage, replacing “action” with a countdown clock, and a 550-foot scuba dive that needed six and a half hours of decompression, passed by reading a Mario Puzo novel one chapter at a time. The Abyss earned about $90 million on a $70 million budget, won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects and holds a 75% Rotten Tomatoes critic score. “From my point of view, pure gold, pure platinum, and in James Cameron Avatar world, pure unobtainium.” - Kirk Krack“I think it had a lot of really incredible moments, and it had a lot of potential, but I think as a whole it fell a little flat.” - Nicole, Gen Z panelistToo Old or Movie Gold is a Vancouver Island movie podcast hosted by Olen Vanderleeden, where classic films meet modern audiences through conversations about timeless movies, memorable performances and the stories behind some of cinema’s greatest productions. • NFL Week 7 - Upsets, Fantasy Football & Game-Day Pretzel Bites
    28 Oct 2026

"Send us a text about this episode!"

BONUS RECIPE: Download Chef Jonathan Frazier's Recipe for Homemade Soft Pretzel Bites: https://bit.ly/S2EP07FootballRecipe

With the NFL season nearing the halfway mark, Erin Haluschak and Chef Jonathan Frazier are back to unpack a Week 7 full of surprises. Atlanta knocked off the previously unbeaten San Francisco 49ers 29-20, Cincinnati rallied past Baltimore, Chicago beat New England and the New York Giants edged Houston in overtime. Erin's Seattle Seahawks kept former Seahawk Kenneth Walker in check to beat Kansas City on Sunday Night Football, leaving Minnesota as the league's last undefeated team, while the Los Angeles Chargers' slide continues.

On the fantasy side, Erin's roster has hit a rough patch, with a quiet week from Jaylen Waddle and injuries to Mike Evans and Romeo Doubs pushing her toward the waiver wire and the trade market. The hosts also look at big days from Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Joe Burrow and Michael Penix Jr., and why protecting the football matters, something they saw first-hand at the BC Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers game in Vancouver. Then Chef Jonathan heads into the kitchen to build the perfect watch party spread, from seven-layer dip and wings to sausage rolls and pulled pork sandwiches, and names homemade soft pretzel bites, finished in a baking soda bath and served warm with mustard or cheese dip, as his F3 Food Pick of the Week.
