It's Halloween, and The Grave Shift is counting down Britain's five most haunted places, from five to one. We tell the real history behind each one and are clear about where the history stops and the legend begins.

We start with the Brown Lady of Raynham Hall and the famous 1936 Country Life photograph. Then come the attic legend of 50 Berkeley Square in Mayfair, the claims surrounding the Ancient Ram Inn in Wotton-under-Edge, and the tragedy of Janet Douglas, Lady Glamis, at Glamis Castle.

Number one is on our own doorstep: Chingle Hall in Goosnargh, near Preston, a moated manor tied to the martyred Franciscan priest Saint John Wall. Oz scores the evidence, Frank defends the ghosts and Adam tries to keep it moving. Frank has also brought a pumpkin called Gourdon.

1. A king obsessed with witchcraft. A magistrate determined to make his name. And a nine-year-old girl whose testimony sent her own mother, brother and sister to the gallows. Adam, Oz and Frank go deep on the Pendle Witch Trials.

A single mum, two young sisters, and eighteen months of chairs sliding, Lego flying, and a grown man's voice coming out of an eleven-year-old's throat. Adam, Oz and Frank go through the Enfield Poltergeist case files -- and the real, unresolved argument between the investigators who were actually there.
