  • Ep. 10 Obsession (2026): When Love Becomes Control | The Bar and the Brain
    13 Oct 2026

If you could make someone love you, would it still be love?

In this spooky-season episode of The Bar and the Brain, attorney Tonée Earle and licensed clinical professional counselor Tayla Fawumi break down the psychological horror film Obsession and ask one uncomfortable question: Did Bear actually love Nikki, or did he just want to control her?

When Bear uses the mysterious Wishing Willow to make his longtime crush Nikki love him more than anyone else in the world, he gets exactly what he asks for. But the consequences expose something much darker about entitlement, rejection, obsession, and the loss of personal autonomy.

From the legal perspective, Tonée examines consent, criminal intent, mens rea and actus reus, potential criminal responsibility, and whether Bear should be held accountable for the violence that follows his wish.

From the mental health perspective, Tayla explores fear of abandonment, narcissistic traits, attachment, rejection sensitivity, and the psychological consequences of having your identity and free will taken away.

    Together, we discuss:

    • Why Bear chose a supernatural wish instead of risking rejection.
    • Whether Nikki could meaningfully consent after losing her autonomy.
    • The difference between genuine affection, obsession, and possession.
    • The disturbing behavior of Nikki's friends and their failure to intervene.
    • The legal questions surrounding Sarah's death and Bear's responsibility.
    • What recovery might look like for Nikki after surviving the ordeal.
    • A fascinating detail Tayla noticed about Nikki's relationship with mirrors.

Our biggest question: Can you really claim to love someone if you cannot accept their right to choose someone else?

Spoiler warning: This episode discusses the film's ending and major plot developments.

Content warning: Discussion of sexual coercion, graphic violence, suicide, and mental health conditions.

Join the conversation! Was Bear a victim of his own wish, or was Nikki the real victim all along?

  • Ep. 9 Savior Complexes, Emotional Abuse & the Men of Imperfect Women
    29 Sep 2026

We've talked about Mary, Eleanor, and Nancy. Now we're finishing our Imperfect Women series with the men—and whew, there's a lot to unpack.

This week on The Bar and the Brain, Tonée Earle and Tay Fawumi break down Howard, Robert, Donovan, Robert's father, and the relationships surrounding the women at the center of the Apple TV series.

Howard and Robert initially seem like completely different men. One is charming, intelligent, and seemingly devoted to his family. The other comes from enormous privilege but struggles with confidence, alcohol, and living in his father's shadow. But as we look closer, some interesting similarities emerge—including the possibility that both men entered their relationships believing they could “save” the women they chose.

We also revisit Howard's relationship with Mary, the power imbalance of a professor pursuing his student, Nancy's affair with Howard, Eleanor's relationship with Robert, and the evidence surrounding Nancy's death.

From the Bar, Tonée examines what could have created a case against Mary and why certain parts of the investigation don't completely add up.

From the Brain, Tay examines Howard's manipulation and narcissistic traits before the conversation expands into emotional availability, fatherhood, male vulnerability, and men's mental health.

Because eventually we land on a question much bigger than Imperfect Women: Who protects the protector?

If men are taught that emotion equals weakness, where are they supposed to put fear, grief, insecurity, and pain?

We're closing the series by talking about what healthy vulnerability can look like—and why both men and women may have some walls to tear down.

  • Ep. 8 Nancy Was Her Own Worst Enemy: Breaking Down Imperfect Women
    15 Sep 2026

Nancy Hennessy spent her adult life building something completely different from the childhood she survived. But once she finally had the husband, money, home, status, and family she seemingly wanted, she started making decisions that threatened all of it.

This week on The Bar and the Brain,Tonée Earle and Tay Fawumi continue their Imperfect Women character series by breaking down Nancy Hennessy.

We start with Nancy's childhood and the trauma surrounding her mother and stepfather before looking at how those experiences may have followed her into adulthood. We discuss her marriage to Robert, her feeling that she didn't belong in his wealthy world, the Hennessy family's treatment of her, and why insecurity may have turned into self-sabotage.

    Then there's Howard.

Why did Nancy sleep with her best friend's husband when she had other opportunities to cheat? Why did she reconnect with the stepfather who abused her when she needed help getting Howard out of her life? And why did Nancy repeatedly turn toward unhealthy men whenever she felt backed into a corner?

Tonée examines the legal implications of Nancy's relationship with her stepfather, while Tay breaks down Nancy's behavior through a mental-health lens, including PTSD, anxiety, self-esteem, self-sabotage and potentially borderline personality disorder.

We also get into Nancy's complicated relationship with her daughter, Robert's drinking, and the moment Nancy finally “let the mask fall.”

Nancy was messy—but of all three Imperfect Women, was she actually the easiest to understand?
