  • What Avoidant Attachment Really Feels Like

What Avoidant Attachment Really Feels Like
    11 Oct 2026
Watch the full Change episode on the Solved podcast: https://mrk.mn/change Most "personal growth" is perfectly designed to feel like progress while producing none of it. In this clip, Drew opens up in real time about being avoidant in relationships, and how he changed the behavior, catching himself, responding instead of shutting down, while the belief underneath it never actually moved. The realization lands live on the mic: he's no more securely attached than he was, he just got better at performing it. I get into my own version of this, including years of sabotaging relationships and starting fights at the most intimate moments, and the one simple agreement I made with myself that finally cracked it. We get into why deep emotional adaptations take years and not months, why relationships are the most powerful place to actually change (we call them adaptation machines), what a documentary about flat earthers reveals about lonely people and their beliefs, and the five-stage model of change that builds relapse right into the process. The core takeaway: understanding yourself and changing yourself are two completely different skills. Chapters Chapters 00:00:00 Introduction: Living with Emotional Machinery 00:00:43 Off the Rails: Confronting Avoidant Attachment 00:01:25 Changing Behavior Without Changing the Adaptation 00:01:57 The Realization: I'm Still Not Secure 00:03:15 The Fear of Abandonment Revealed 00:04:21 What Do I Replace This With? 00:06:06 Mark's Story: From Avoidant to Married 00:07:47 The Birthday Dinner Sabotage 00:08:10 The Decision to Stick With It 00:10:12 Uncalibrated Emotional Expression 00:11:04 Relationships as Adaptation Machines 00:13:19 The Flat Earth Documentary: Adaptations as Belonging 00:14:45 The Five Stages of Change 00:15:48 Maintenance and Relapse: The Hardest Parts 00:16:43 Where Are You in the Process? 00:17:34 The Barrier to Something Deeper ⇨ Sign up for my newsletter, Your Next Breakthrough. Why the Most Talented People Never Make It
    4 Oct 2026
Watch the full Commitment episode on the Solved podcast: https://mrk.mn/tc7phn0t. The people who make it aren't the most talented or the most confident. They're the ones who can't imagine doing anything else. I went to music school with a dropout rate near ninety percent, and the ones who made it were never the students joking about becoming a pizza guy. Drew and I get into real faith versus blind faith, why Elon says he'd give aspiring entrepreneurs no encouragement at all, and the moment I told my co-founder I planned to die in this industry. Your calling doesn't ask your permission. The Only Thing People Actually Regret
    1 Oct 2026
Watch the full Commitment episode on the Solved podcast: https://mrk.mn/tc7phn0t. People don't regret the decisions they made. They regret the ones they never got around to making. I've made plenty of bad calls, lost money, embarrassed myself, and the only things I truly regret are the times I hurt someone I love. Drew and I get into the research on regret, Annie Duke's point that we all quit too late, and why a bias toward action beats a bias toward waiting almost every time. You're taking too long to decide, and it's costing you more than a wrong decision ever would. • Why the Marshmallow Test Was Wrong

Why the Marshmallow Test Was Wrong
    29 Sep 2026
Watch the full Change episode on the Solved podcast: https://mrk.mn/change You've heard about the marshmallow test: the kids who waited for a second marshmallow grew up to ace the SATs and out-earn everyone, so willpower is destiny. There's one problem. The researcher who ran it, Walter Mischel, didn't believe that conclusion himself. In this clip, Drew and I get into what the famous study actually shows once you look past the headline. When Mischel ran it in Trinidad, the thing that predicted who could wait wasn't discipline, it was whether a kid had a reliable father at home. Later replications nailed it down: kids who'd been lied to grabbed the marshmallow immediately, and a study of 900 kids found the willpower effect basically vanished once you controlled for income. The takeaway isn't that self-discipline is fake. It's that what looks like a fixed personality trait is usually an adaptation to your environment. I get into the uncomfortable version of this from my own life: how my drinking started as a coping strategy to bridge my introversion and my craving for novelty. Chapters Chapters 00:00:00 The Marshmallow Test: Psychology's Most Famous Experiment 00:01:49 The Trinidad Study: Environment Over Willpower 00:02:32 The Trust Factor: Why Context Determines Self-Control 00:03:21 The 2013 Reliability Experiment 00:04:14 The 2018 Study That Ended the Debate 00:04:49 Two Key Takeaways: Environment and the Unconscious 00:05:44 The Three-Layer Cake: Traits, Adaptations, and Behavior 00:06:35 High Agreeableness in a Confrontational Workplace 00:07:40 The Introvert-Adventurer Paradox 00:09:02 When Adaptations Aren't Healthy ⇨ Sign up for my newsletter, Your Next Breakthrough. Why Constraints Actually Make You Happy
    27 Sep 2026
Watch the full Commitment episode on the Solved podcast: https://mrk.mn/tc7phn0t. Here's the uncomfortable truth about happiness: the decisions you can't undo are the ones that make you happiest. Harvard's Dan Gilbert calls it the psychological immune system, and it kicks in hardest when a door is truly closed behind you. Drew and I get into the one-sentence prenup that's a masterclass in incentives, why Gilbert proposed to his girlfriend the second he understood his own research, and why keeping every door open is a recipe for staying stuck. Constraints don't trap you. They free you. Watch the full Commitment episode on the Solved podcast: https://mrk.mn/tc7phn0t. Your brain was built for a world of scarcity, and it has no idea what to do with dating apps, endless scrolling, and infinite choice. Drew walks through the study where men rated their own relationships lower after seeing ten attractive faces for a few seconds, which is roughly thirty seconds online. We also get into additive bias, the reason your first move when you're unhappy is to add something new when what you actually need is to subtract. More options are quietly making you worse off.
