About this listen

This is a podcast for service personnel who have reached the time they have to leave the services. This can be a really mentally difficult time, where you feel utterly alone! After numerous conversations with friends and leavers, a theme started to develop. I posted on LinkedIn to find there were a number of people feeling the same and wanted a place to talk and get help. So Shelve Your Boots was born! This cast will be discussing the mental and emotional side of leaving the services and what you should expect coming into the real world once again!Katie Fryer Economics Management Management & Leadership

  • The Medical Discharge

This week I spoke to Dean Phillips who works at the Veterans Welfare Group where he looks at medical discharge cases.

Medical discharges are on the rise but information surrounding them can be slightly muffled. Dean Has a great way of explaining this process due to going through it himself. Dean has incredible experience in this field and is well worth contacting if you find yourself in the medical discharge route.

This week I spoke to Stacey Denyer who was really open about her journey about leaving the military and continuing to live with her medical condition.

Stacey has had some incredible experiences from being involved in the Invictus Games to doing work with a variety of charities.

A lot of veterans are leaving with medical conditions but there are so many communities out there who can support you.

    You are not alone.

  • The Glass Box
    Jan 12 2026

This week I was joined by Emily Gannaway, Emily was incredibly open and honest about her transition out of the military with mental health diagnosis.

It's not often you can have a conversation with someone so openly about mental health and speaking to Emily did make me feel seen.

This podcast may be triggering for some listeners. It is a conversation that is needed more frequently with this level of openness.
