Your host, Mike King, brings over four decades of experience in criminal justice and behavioral analysis. A retired law enforcement executive, Mike served as Chief of Staff to Utah Attorney General Jan Graham and Weber County Attorney Reed M. Richards. He began his career at the Ogden Police Department, where he worked patrol, motor enforcement, and SWAT before moving into investigations where he led task forces that hunted serial predators and violent offenders.

Mike’s expertise earned him national recognition. He served as co-chair of the FBI’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP) National Advisory Board, directed UTAP, the Utah Criminal Tracking and Analysis Project, and supported intelligence operations during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

After retiring from public service, Mike joined the Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri), where he spent years consulting with police agencies around the globe on intelligence gathering, emergency communications, and major event management. In 2024, he retired again, this time to focus full-time on Profiling Evil and its growing community of true crime investigators, students, and enthusiasts.

Mike is an internationally recognized speaker, trainer, and adjunct professor, as well as a visiting scholar at multiple universities. He’s authored several acclaimed works on crime and human behavior, including:

    Day six of testimony in the Brendan Banfield murder trial wasn’t about theatrics, it was about how this case was built, how investigators handled competing theories, and how leadership drew a hard line between collecting digital evidence and over-interpreting it. The defense tried to turn digital forensics into doubt, leaning hard on a simple idea: you can’t always tell who’s behind the screen. And that sounds persuasive… until you remember what trials are actually decided on: the totality of the evidence, the blood evidence, timelines, behavior, opportunity, contradictions, and corroboration. A police commander pulled no punches explaining why a digital forensics detective was removed from major-crimes digital work: not because the extraction steps were botched, but because leadership believed the detective was making “unsubstantiated deductions”, reading conclusions into data that the science alone couldn’t support. And just as important: a lot of the “transfers” the defense tried to make look suspicious sounded like what they often are in big agencies, routine, normal rotations, or career moves, not purging people for failing to follow a preconceived theory.
