A nuclear exchange does not create one single survival problem. It creates a sequence of changing emergencies: blast, fire, fallout, contaminated dust, separation from family, interrupted water and medical care, food spoilage, supply shortages, and possibly disrupted growing seasons far beyond the places that were attacked.
This episode begins with a documented survivor of Hiroshima, Akiko Takakura, who was inside Geibi Bank about 300 meters from the hypocenter when the atomic bomb detonated on August 6, 1945. Her survival shows the value—and the limits—of shelter. A building may protect someone through the first catastrophe, but it cannot by itself restore clean water, medicine, transportation, or food production.
Through an illustrative modern household in an agricultural community, the episode follows the first year after a hypothetical large nuclear exchange. The household must shelter from possible fallout, avoid unnecessary travel, decontaminate carefully, protect water and food, manage refrigeration failure, and make difficult choices as local supplies tighten. Months later, the danger may shift again: scientific models indicate that severe urban fires could send soot high into the atmosphere, reducing sunlight and disrupting agriculture under some assumed scenarios.
Immediate official instructions always come first. Shelter when fallout is the danger, leave only for direct threats such as fire or collapse or when directed by authorities, use protected food and water, and seek verified local information before making long-term decisions.
