  • What Do African Portfolios Look Like
    24 Oct 2026

Seasoned investors average a 14.8% yield. Growth-stage investors average 15.8%. Here's why that's by design, using real Level Africa data.

What does an investment portfolio actually look like as you grow? In this episode of Money Made Real, Abraham Banaddawa breaks down what we see on the Level Africa platform across three investor stages: portfolio size, asset mix, average yield, and the reasoning behind each.

🌱 The Beginner: year 1, average starting age 27

    • Portfolio: USD 500 – 3,000 across ~4 products

    • Government securities, trending NSE/USE stocks, fixed income for cash flow, and a unit trust or money market fund

    • ~50% held in unit trusts for liquidity, since most beginners don't yet have an emergency fund

    • Average portfolio yield: 13.2% – 13.5%

📈 The Growth Investor: ~2.5 years in

    • Portfolio: USD 5,000 – 25,000 across ~7 assets

    • Emergency fund built; the focus shifts to return

    • Government securities overtaking unit trusts as the largest allocation

    • Average portfolio yield: ~15.8%

🏛️ The Seasoned Investor: ~10 years in, typical age 52

    • Portfolio: USD 50,000 – 500,000 across 16+ assets

    • Maintenance stage: diversifying so no single position can sink the portfolio

    • Average portfolio yield: ~14.8%

  • Your Questions Answered
    17 Oct 2026

School fees aren't an emergency. They're a scheduled bill.

Here's how to plan for them, plus your questions on couples, debt and goals. You asked, we answered. In this episode of Money Made Real, Abraham Banaddawa works through the money questions we hear most from the Level Africa community.

🎒 School feesSchool fees are a scheduled expense, not an emergency. Either frontload the money into an investment account or automate monthly transfers into a money market fund so it earns interest until the term begins.

💑 Combining finances as a couple. A hybrid model: a shared account for necessities and joint goals, plus separate "guilt-free" accounts for individual spending. It works best with open communication and grace for each other's financial history.

💳 Paying off debt. Snowball (smallest balance first, for quick wins) or Avalanche (highest interest rate first, to pay less overall). Choose the one you'll actually stick to.

🛟 Emergency fund vs opportunity fund Keep your emergency fund liquid and untouched until a real emergency. Only once it's fully funded should you start a separate opportunity fund for deals and investments.

🎯 Setting financial goals. Pick one "north star" goal for the long term (10–15 years) and one for the medium term (~5 years). Use short-term goals (under 3 years) to build the habit of investing.
