In June 1886, contemporary reports described Joseph Carey Merrick arriving at Liverpool Street Station in distress after returning from continental Europe. A crowd gathered, police became involved, and later accounts connected his return to a visiting card for London Hospital surgeon Frederick Treves.
Merrick’s life has often been reduced to a stage name, medical photographs, and a death surrounded by retelling. But he was a young man from Leicester who experienced family loss, worsening disability, insecure work, the workhouse, human exhibition, and eventually a more protected life at the London Hospital.
This episode separates documented records from Frederick Treves’s later memoir, examines what is known and unknown about Merrick’s exhibition arrangements and final years, and considers why Proteus syndrome remains the leading retrospective explanation for his condition without treating it as proven.
Most of all, it follows Joseph Merrick as a reader, letter writer, model maker, theatergoer, and person whose life was repeatedly interpreted by others.
This podcast uses artificial intelligence in its research, writing, production, and narration. Episodes are editorially reviewed before publication.
