In October 2000, a man began posting in internet chat forums making strange claims. He said he was a time traveler from the year 2036. Many people assumed he was simply spinning a yarn, that is, until he posted diagrams and pictures of his Time Machine. He explained its operation and cited known theoretical physics to support it. He said he had come back for a specific model of computer, one he said could emulate other systems and save his timeline from the real-world computing phenomenon known as the Unix 2038 problem.
People rolled their eyes, that is, until the company that built it confirmed that it could do what he claimed and revealed that it had never publicly disclosed that feature. This week, we’re looking at the most verifiable and proof driven time travel claim in history. We’ll look at the man behind the claims, what he said the future was like, the proof that made him so believable, and finally decide if one of the greatest legends from the early internet could really be true.
