There are about 1,500 Brethren meeting halls around the world. The local brethren paid for them, built them and maintained them, often over generations. So who actually controls them now? Steve Simmons walks through what has quietly changed. In New Zealand, every locality's hall has been placed in a new trust, and every one of those trusts has the same corporate trustee, PBCC Properties New Zealand Limited. Similar structures appear to be going in across Australia and elsewhere.Steve goes back to Aberdeen in 1970, when large numbers of brethren could no longer support James Taylor Junior and some still managed to keep their halls. He explains why he believes the new structures are designed so that can never happen again. If a local assembly can no longer accept Bruce Hales as the elect vessel, but still believes in God, reads the Bible, preaches the gospel and breaks bread every week, should it lose the halls its own families paid for?Steve also speaks from his own experience of being cut off from the fellowship he was born into.
