🤠 What happens when the long-term outlook looks promising, but every short-term forecast points downhill?
In this episode of Trail Boss Bull Run Weekly, we put Mohawk Industries (MHK) through four ARDL statistical model runs, examining inflation (CPI), the Federal Funds Rate, the 10-Year Treasury Yield, and WTI crude oil.
With MHK closing at $120.29 for the week ending October 16, 2026, all four models projected a lower price for the following week:
-
CPI inflation: $119.83 — down 0.38%.
-
Federal Funds Rate: $119.64 — down 0.54%.
-
10-Year Treasury Yield: $119.07 — down 1.01%.
-
WTI crude oil: $120.19 — down 0.09%.
Yet the longer-run estimates tell a more complicated story. The CPI and crude oil models show modest positive relationships, while the 10-Year Treasury Yield model produces a much larger positive long-run estimate. The Federal Funds Rate model, on the other hand, produces a negative long-run estimate.
That’s the Tailwind Paradox: how can a model show a potential long-term tailwind while still forecasting a short-term decline?
We explore the difference between short-run price movements and estimated long-run relationships, compare the four model outputs, and ask what these conflicting signals can teach us about market analysis.
We also discuss an important limitation: a model’s estimated relationship is not proof of cause and effect, and a positive long-run coefficient does not guarantee future gains. Even when persistence readings appear more moderate, the reliability of the results depends on the model’s assumptions, data quality, and statistical testing.
According to the market dividend information in these reports, MHK pays no dividend, so this analysis focuses on projected price movement rather than dividend income.
This is what the Trail Boss Bull Weekly is all about: using AI-assisted research and statistical models to investigate the market, challenge assumptions, and learn from real experiments instead of chasing every headline.
Study the data. Question the assumptions. Keep your eyes on the trail.
