  • MASKS - Week 2: The Masks We Wear
    18 Oct 2026

Originally delivered October 18, 2026, at Christ Community Church of Delaware County in Manchester, Iowa.

What are you hiding behind your mask?

Every day, we present different versions of ourselves to the world. We build our identities around careers, relationships, accomplishments, appearances, and the expectations of others. Sometimes we even hide behind our faith, becoming so comfortable looking like we have everything together that we struggle to admit when we don't.

But what happens when the person everyone knows isn't the person we're actually experiencing life as?

In this concluding message of his two-part MASKS sermon series, Wesley Farnsworth explores the reasons we hide, the fear of being fully known, and the freedom that comes when we stop pretending.

Beginning with Adam and Eve hiding from God in Genesis 3, Wesley examines how fear and shame influence the masks we wear. Through Scripture and personal experiences involving family identity, unemployment, and recovery, he challenges us to consider whether the identities we've built are preventing us from experiencing genuine relationships and spiritual growth.

Drawing from Psalm 139, Luke 18, Ephesians 2, and other passages, Wesley reminds us that God already knows everything beneath our masks: our failures, insecurities, fears, wounds, and struggles.

And He still invites us closer.

“He asks you to take it off because you can't surrender what you're pretending isn't there.”

This message explores the importance of honesty, healthy vulnerability, Christian community, and allowing Jesus to transform the parts of ourselves we've spent years trying to hide.

Because the goal isn't simply to become comfortable with what's underneath the mask. It's to bring the real you to Jesus and allow Him to begin His work.

This is Week 2 of the MASKS series. Week 1, The Masks Churches Wear, examines how church traditions, preferences, and expectations can sometimes become barriers to helping people encounter Jesus.
