  • Professional vs. Ethical: What Makes a Great Safari Guide?
    27 Oct 2026

You can know every bird, read animal tracks, drive confidently, and find the wildlife your guests have traveled thousands of miles to see.

But does that automatically make you a great safari guide?

    Not necessarily.

In this episode of The Guide Code, we explore the difference between being a professional safari guide and being an ethical one — and why the best guides need both.

Imagine finding a leopard after hours of searching. Your guests are excited, their cameras are ready, and then the sighting becomes crowded. The leopard begins moving away, but your guests want you to follow it.

    You know you can follow.

    But should you?

That question lies at the heart of responsible safari guiding. Our decisions affect more than the quality of a photograph. They can influence wildlife, guest safety, the experience of other visitors, and the example we set for people discovering the wilderness.

In this episode, we examine the pressures that can influence a guide’s judgment, from guest expectations to competition with other vehicles, and why good guiding requires more than technical skill.

    In this episode, we explore:

    * Professionalism vs. ethics: Why technical competence alone doesn’t make an ethical guide.

    * The leopard test: How to think through a difficult wildlife sighting when guests want to follow an animal.

    * Guest expectations: How to balance excellent hospitality with responsible decisions.

    * Interpretation and education: Why safari guides should help guests understand wildlife, not simply find it.

    * Industry pressure: How competition, radio traffic, and fear of missing out can influence decisions.

    * Four questions every guide should ask: A practical framework for thinking through difficult situations in the field.

    * A personal guide code: The responsibilities we carry toward wildlife, guests, colleagues, and local communities.

    Who is this episode for?

This conversation is especially relevant to safari guides, driver-guides, tour leaders, safari operators, wildlife photographers, and anyone interested in responsible wildlife tourism.

But it’s also for travelers who want to understand what goes into a thoughtful, well-guided safari — including the decisions their guide makes when the best choice isn’t necessarily the most exciting one.
