Interviews with former coaches and athletes who are considered among the legends of DeKalb County (TN) sports history!

  • 50 YEARS OF TIGER FOOTBALL: Coaches Wayne Cantrell, Steve Trapp, & Michael Shaw
    17 Oct 2026

For more than half a century, DeKalb County High School football has been defined by unforgettable victories, heartbreaking defeats, fierce rivalries, remarkable athletes, and the men who helped shape the program into what it is today.

But the story of Tiger football nearly ended before it ever truly began.

From 1963 through 1970, the newly consolidated DeKalb County High School football program struggled to find its identity. Despite bringing together high school athletes from across the county, the Tigers managed just 18 victories in the program's first eight seasons—a dramatic decline from the 24 wins Smithville High had recorded in the four years preceding consolidation.

Then came a young coach named Wayne Cantrell.

His first Tiger team finished 0-7-3, and with school administrators considering disbanding the football program altogether, the future looked bleak. But what happened next would forever change the course of DCHS football. Cantrell's second team went 6-4, and his third finished an impressive 9-2!

Over 28 seasons, Coach Cantrell guided the Tigers through the highs and lows of high school football. He witnessed rivalries come and go, programs rise and fall, and navigated the challenges of changing classifications—including the TSSAA's move to five classifications in 1993, which presented enormous obstacles for the DeKalb County program.

When Cantrell's coaching career at DCHS came to an end, another familiar face would eventually take the reins.

Steve Trapp, once a standout player under Cantrell, began his own remarkable 21-year journey as the Tigers' head coach. Like his former mentor, Trapp inherited a program in need of revitalization and helped restore pride, competitiveness, and prominence to DeKalb County football.

Now, a new chapter is being written under Michael Shaw, a longtime Tiger assistant who stepped into the head coaching position in 2026.
