In this episode of Families Navigating Addiction and Recovery, I sit down with Ashley Howitt, founder of Somatics-Embodied Clinical Hypnotherapy.
We talk about what happens when addiction keeps an entire family living in a state of anxiety, uncertainty, and constant nervous system activation. Ashley explains how parents can become so accustomed to being on alert that reacting, worrying, rescuing, or trying to control the situation can begin to feel automatic.
We explore how hypnotherapy, somatic work, Internal Family Systems-informed practices, and nervous system regulation may help people better understand the patterns underneath their reactions. Ashley also explains why parents need support for themselves, not only for the child or loved one experiencing addiction.
We also discuss practical ways parents can respond differently during difficult moments: slowing things down, recognizing their own activation, taking time to regulate before responding, giving their loved one space and choice, and setting boundaries from a calmer place.
One of the central themes of this conversation is that staying connected does not mean accepting harmful behavior. Families can establish clear boundaries while still communicating love, presence, and a willingness to listen when their loved one is ready.
