  • Holding Back Coastal Erosion

    Holding Back Coastal Erosion
    26 Oct 2026
Send us Fan MailFighting the Sea: How Do We Hold Back Coastal Erosion?Hello and welcome to the Geography Expert podcast that helps you understand the world around you. Today we're looking at a battle that humans have been fighting for centuries: coastal erosion.Have you ever stood on a beach and watched waves crashing against the cliffs? It might look beautiful, but those waves are constantly wearing away the coastline. This process is called coastal erosion, and in some places it threatens homes, roads, businesses, and even entire communities. So how do we hold back coastal erosion? Let's find out.First, let's remind ourselves why erosion happens. Waves hit the coast day after day, sometimes carrying sand, shingle and rocks that act like giant pieces of sandpaper. Over time, cliffs can collapse, beaches can shrink, and the coastline can retreat inland. For people living near the coast, this can be a serious problem. That's why many countries invest millions of pounds in coastal defences. One of the most common methods is the sea wall. A sea wall is a large concrete structure built along the coastline. It works by acting as a barrier between the sea and the land. When waves hit the wall, much of their energy is absorbed or reflected back out to sea.Sea walls can be very effective, and they often protect valuable land and property. However, they are expensive to build and maintain. Strong waves can damage them over time, and reflected wave energy can sometimes increase erosion elsewhere.Another method is the groyne. Groynes are wooden or rock barriers built at right angles to the beach. Their job is to trap sand being moved along the coast by a process called longshore drift.By trapping sand, groynes help build up beaches. Wider beaches absorb more wave energy, which means less erosion takes place further inland. The downside is that areas further down the coast may receive less sand, which can increase erosion there.A third strategy is rock armour, sometimes called rip-rap. This involves placing huge boulders along the coastline. The gaps between the rocks absorb and weaken wave energy before it reaches the land behind.Rock armour is generally cheaper than sea walls and can blend into the natural environment more easily. However, transporting and placing the massive rocks can still be costly. You may also come across gabions. These are wire cages filled with rocks and stones. They absorb wave energy and help stabilise coastlines. Gabions are relatively inexpensive, but the wire baskets can rust and become damaged over time. Not all coastal protection involves building large structures. In recent years, geographers and environmental managers have increasingly focused on working with nature. One example is beach nourishment. This involves adding extra sand or shingle to beaches. A larger beach acts as a natural buffer, absorbing wave energy before it reaches cliffs or sea defences.Another approach is managed retreat, sometimes called managed realignment. Instead of trying to stop the sea completely, people allow certain low-value areas to flood naturally. New salt marshes can develop, which absorb wave energy and reduce erosion further inland. This approach may sound unusual, but it can be cheaper and more sustainable than constantly building expensive defences. So which method is best? The answer depends on several factors. Decision-makers must consider the value of the land being protected, the cost of the defence, the environmental impact, and how long the solution is likely to last. For example, a busy seaside town may justify expensive sea walls, while a rural stretch of coastline may be better suited to managed retreat. This highlights the idea of cost-benefit analysis, where geographers compare the benefits of protection with the costs involved. As sea levels continue to rise because of climate change, coastal erosion is expected to become an even bigger challenge in many parts of the world. Governments will need to make difficult decisions about which areas to defend and which areas may need to adapt.Host: So, to sum up, coastal erosion occurs when waves wear away the coastline. To reduce its impact, people use hard engineering methods such as sea walls, groynes, rock armour and gabions, as well as softer approaches like beach nourishment and managed retreat. Each method has advantages and disadvantages, and there is no universal solution. Thanks for listening to the Geography Expert podcast.
