Minnie Woolsey became known to audiences through names that were built for posters, ticket windows, and movie credits: Minnie Ha Ha and Koo-Koo the Bird Girl. Her surviving image is unforgettable. Her surviving biography is not.

A photograph cataloged in nineteen sixteen identifies Woolsey under the Minnie Ha Ha billing. A later archive description links her to the name Koo-Koo the Bird Girl. In nineteen thirty-two, MGM placed her before the camera in Tod Browning’s Freaks, where her appearance became part of one of the most argued-over films in American history. Then, in nineteen forty-two, a brief item in Billboard reported that she was recovering in Coney Island Hospital after breaking her arm while descending stairs.

Robert Pershing Wadlow of Alton, Illinois, remains the tallest person recognized by Guinness World Records, but his life cannot be reduced to a number. In 1939, Robert took a physician to court over a medical article that described not only his body but his character. The case failed, yet the lawsuit remains a documented act of resistance against being defined by someone else. A brace-related foot injury became infected during a Michigan appearance in 1940, ending his life at twenty-two. His measurements survived in great detail. His own voice did not.
