  • Why You Get Defensive With Your Spouse (And What to Say Instead)

Why You Get Defensive With Your Spouse (And What to Say Instead)
    29 Oct 2026
Your spouse brings you a hurt, and before you know it, you’re defending yourself or rushing to fix it. Dr. Josh uses an example from his own marriage and unpacks why we do this: an old wound gets stirred up, and we react to the past instead of the person in front of us. When we jump to fixing, our spouse can feel like a problem to solve or a burden to get through. Plus, Dr. Josh shares the three words that get you back to what’s really broken: the connection.

    Here are some key takeaways:
    • Most criticism carries a feeling. Listen for the feeling, not just the words.
    • Defensiveness keeps the pain cycle spinning.
    • We often react to an old wound, not the person in front of us.
    • The two three-word phrases that help you respond to the hurt.
    • How to give your spouse the benefit of the doubt.
    • Name the opponent (illness, stress, a hard week), not your spouse.

  • "Must Be Nice!" 4 Ways to Stop Keeping Score in Marriage

"Must Be Nice!" 4 Ways to Stop Keeping Score in Marriage
    22 Oct 2026
He’s up at 5AM thinking, “Must be nice to sleep in.” She’s thinking, “Must be nice to leave the house.” Sound familiar?

In this episode, Dr. Josh unpacks how tired spouses start keeping score, and four practical ways to get back on the same team.

    Here are some key takeaways:
    • “Must be nice” is where scorekeeping starts.
    • When we don’t feel seen, we cope: sarcasm, martyrdom, attacking, or going silent.
    • Ask yourself: do I really believe this is their character? Usually, it isn’t.
    • Swap “you” for “we, us, our," and an "us-against-the-world" attitude.
    • Walk the tightrope of responsibility. Own your part without falling into blame or shame.
    • Name your opponents: kids, work, travel, in-laws, money, addiction. Bring them into the light.
    • Every day, say one moment you felt seen, heard, loved, or appreciated.

  • 6 Practical Ways to Build Joy: Present or Just Available?

6 Practical Ways to Build Joy: Present or Just Available?
    15 Oct 2026
Does your family experience you as present, or just available? Do you find yourself hoping joy will one day find you once things slow down? Dr. Josh gets practical about building joy into your days, weeks, and year: 30-second habits, celebrations, and what he calls "enthusiastic welcoming." This is part two of our joy series. Don't try it all. Pick one and start there. It's the two-degree shifts that make all the difference.

    Here are some key takeaways:
    • Joy is built relationally.
    • Numb the hard feelings and you numb the good ones too.
    • Receive, relive, remember. Don't just list what you're grateful for. Step back into the moment.
    • Microdose joy. Thirty seconds watching a bird or your kid's wonder counts.
    • Welcome your people like you're glad they're here.
    • Sabbath lets your soul catch up to your body.
    • Ask yourself: who needs to feel my delight?
