Are you making fitness WAY more complicated than it needs to be?

Perfect exercises. Perfect rep ranges. Perfect rest periods. Perfect programs.

Everybody has an opinion about the best way to train. Social media has made it easier than ever to get lost in the details.

But what if you're prioritizing the wrong stuff? We see it all the time.

In Episode 3 of Det. Ron & Dr. Matt: INCOMING, we're kicking off our two-part series, GET YOUR PRIORITIES STRAIGHT, starting with TRAINING.

We're breaking down what ACTUALLY matters when it comes to building muscle, getting stronger, and creating a fitness routine you can sustain.

Inspired by the training-priority pyramid popularized by Eric Helms, Matt breaks down the hierarchy of effective training while Ron brings decades of bodybuilding and real-world coaching experience to the conversation.

The biggest takeaway? The best training program in the world is worthless if you can't consistently follow it.

IN THIS EPISODE:

• Habits & Consistency: Why successful training starts outside the gym.

• Volume, Intensity & Frequency: Understanding the variables that drive results.

• Progressive Overload: Getting stronger without constantly beating yourself into the ground.

• Exercise Selection: Why no single exercise is mandatory for building muscle or strength.

• Rest Periods, Tempo & Technique: Important details, but NOT your foundation.

• Individualization: Building a program around YOUR goals, schedule, recovery, and limitations.

• Training for Real Life: Why 45 minutes of consistent effort beats a perfect two-hour workout you never actually do.

We also tackle motivation, self-sabotage, fitness influencers declaring exercises "invalid," and why obsessing over optimization can actually hold you back.

And because it's INCOMING, Ron wraps things up with a ridiculous police story involving an early-morning search warrant, a battering ram, and one hell of an unexpected entrance.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

Stop majoring in the minors.

Build the foundation. Show up. Train hard. Progress intelligently. Repeat.

Fitness isn't about having the perfect plan for two weeks. It's about building something that works for YEARS.

We know more about fitness than ever. But are we actually better at it?

Before influencers, wearables, exercise optimization and endless studies on the “perfect” way to train, most of us learned differently. You watched the biggest guy in the gym, read Muscle & Fitness and FLEX, copied workouts from people you wanted to look like, and occasionally did some absolutely ridiculous shit because a magazine said it worked.

In Episode 2 of Det. Ron & Dr. Matt: INCOMING, we're going old school vs. new school.

Ron takes us back to the late '90s, when bodybuilding magazines, gym culture and trial-and-error were basically the internet. Matt came along about a decade later, as fitness information moved from magazines and forums to YouTube, evidence-based training and eventually today's information overload.

And both roads produced plenty of questionable decisions.

Ron admits to doing an eight-hour arm workout because FLEX said it could add half an inch to his arms. Matt remembers doing curls and ab rollouts between video-game loading screens chasing the Abercrombie bod. We get into ridiculous training volume, ego lifting, body-part splits and the fitness rules we once treated like gospel.

Then there's the nutrition: eating every two hours to “stoke the metabolic fire,” the anabolic window, carbs after dark, fasted cardio, low-glycemic everything, and Ron eating enough tilapia during contest prep to make his house permanently smell like fish.

Some of it was nonsense.

But the old-school guys also got a lot right.

Train hard. Get stronger. Eat your protein. Take creatine. Track your workouts. Learn your body. Show up consistently. Stop searching for the perfect program and do the work.

Modern exercise science has absolutely made fitness better in many ways. But somewhere between bro science and optimization culture, there's probably a sweet spot.

We talk about how our training has evolved, what we've completely changed our minds about, why more information doesn't always produce better results, and what the old-school meathead mentality can still teach us.

Old-school experience. New-school science. A lot of mistakes in between.

Fitness. Health. Mindset. Sports. Life.

Whatever comes up, we're talking about it.

Life keeps coming. So do we.

What happens when the body you've always relied on suddenly stops cooperating?

In Episode 1 of Det. Ron & Dr. Matt: INCOMING, we're talking injuries, recovery, getting older, and what it actually takes to stay physically capable when life starts beating the hell out of you.

And between the two of us, we've got some experience.

Ron has broken his back, tailbone and ribs, collapsed a lung, ruptured a biceps tendon, torn both MCLs, torn a hamstring, broken his foot, undergone hernia surgery, and accumulated plenty of other wear and tear along the way.

Matt's injury résumé includes countless ankle sprains, stingers, a torn abdominal muscle, major hamstring injuries that changed the trajectory of his athletic career, shoulder injuries, a torn pec, a lumbar disc herniation, and plenty more.

But this episode isn't just about comparing scars.

We get into Ron's 2002 motorcycle accident that left him with a broken back, broken ribs, a collapsed lung and a broken tailbone, and how that eventually became part of the path that led him to bodybuilding.

Ron also tells the story of completely rupturing his biceps tendon in the middle of contest prep, and we talk about something that doesn't get discussed enough: sometimes the hardest part of an injury isn't the physical pain. It's what the injury takes away from you.

Your sport. Your job. Your independence. Your training. Your identity.

We also dig into what people get wrong about pain and recovery, including why pain doesn't always perfectly reflect tissue damage, why an ugly MRI doesn't automatically mean you're broken, why complete rest isn't always the answer, and how intelligently training around an injury can become part of the recovery process.

Then we zoom out.

At 37 and 47, what does staying athletic actually look like? What changes as you age? What can you preserve? And what should you be doing now if you still want a strong, mobile, capable body decades from now?

We cover:

• Pain vs. structural findings
• What asymptomatic MRI studies actually show
• Training around injuries instead of automatically stopping everything
• Blood-flow restriction and cross-education
• Fear avoidance and gradually rebuilding confidence
• Strength, muscle, power and aerobic capacity as we age
• Why hip extension and thoracic mobility matter
• Ron's approach to training differently at 47
• And one police story involving a drunk guy, Ron doing his best impression of Terry Tate, and some unfortunate friendly fire
