  • Our Workplace Future — Part 2 with Vince Kimura
    1 Oct 2026

Vince Kimura is back for Part 2 of our conversation on the future of work and this one goes even deeper into what's actually broken in how we train, hire, and lead people, and what it'll take to fix it.

Vince is a workforce development leader here in Hawaiʻi, currently building Future Harvest, a new skilled-trades and agriculture-focused training program at Leeward Community College, and a recent finalist for the Workforce Development Heroes award. In this episode, we get into:

Why a 71% turnover rate in the restaurant industry isn't a “restaurant problem” it's a leadership and culture problem

The real reason Costco holds onto employees (about 3% turnover) while Sam's Club/Walmart doesn't (20%+) and it's not the paycheck

Why “employees don't quit over salary, they quit over bad managers” keeps showing up in the data

The Triple Helix model how government, industry, and academia actually have to work together to move workforce development forward

Vince's honest, evolving take on AI: an equalizer, a disruptor, and like the internet before it something we're all still learning how to live with

Why training designed for today's job is already behind, and what it means to design for the job that exists 10–20 years from now

Succession planning, mentorship, and why leadership can't be taught in a classroom

Vince's “magic wand” vision for what workforce development in Hawaiʻi and beyond could look like in the next few years

This is Part 2 of our ongoing conversation with Vince on workforce development. [Link to Part 1 here]

  • Self-Trust and How to Build It with Sue Reid
    12 Sep 2026

I went into this conversation thinking we'd talk about confidence. We ended up somewhere better.

Sue Reid hosts Confidence Matters, and about twenty minutes in, we both landed on the same thing: most of us aren't actually short on confidence. We're short on trusting ourselves in the first place — which is a different problem, and a harder one to fake your way through.

So that's what this one is really about. Why "just be more confident" never sticks. Where the line is between control and strength, and how easy it is to mix them up. And what it looks like, practically, to start trusting your own judgment again instead of overriding it because that's felt safer for years.

  • "We Don't Have a Talent Shortage" — Rethinking Work in Hawaiʻi | Vince Kimura
    12 Jul 2026

Bryan Murray sits down again with Vince Kimura for a wide-ranging conversation on the future of work, purpose, and opportunity in Hawaiʻi — all through the lens of workforce development.

Vince has built his career across startups, higher education, government, and the private sector (from KPMG and PBEC to the University of Hawaiʻi system, and now helping launch a new skilled-trades, agriculture, technology, and business program at Leeward Community College). In this episode, he argues that Hawaiʻi doesn't have a talent shortage — it has an opportunity-alignment problem — and that the greatest investment any community can make isn't in technology, but in people.

Bryan and Vince get into: • Why "culture eats strategy for breakfast" — and how generational and cultural gaps shape hiring • Mentorship as the real engine of workforce development • Redefining success beyond a paycheck, and how younger workers think about balance, flexibility, and meaning • Mental health as a measure of a thriving workforce (Seeds of Wellbeing, and Bhutan's gross national happiness) • A Waiʻanae program that hit 100% employment outcomes — and what skilled trades can learn from it • What AI really means for work: "AI won't replace people — people using AI will" • Hawaiʻi's technology future: R&D, agriculture, dual-use defense innovation, and marrying hospitality's people skills with technical skills • Keeping and bringing talent home — a "Singaporean" take on why leaving can be a good thing • The coming leadership shift as every baby boomer reaches retirement age • Advice for anyone in their 20s: stay curious, protect your relationships, and stop chasing titles

The line that ties it all together: "Learning is no longer preparation for work — learning is the work."
